We are accepting applications for future rescues starting in early 2010 - Dates will be confirmed shortly....

October 2009

10th October 2009 was the last Henrehomers' rescue for 2009. We brought out nearly 1300 birds who are now in new homes across the country. Many thanks to all rehomers and coordinators who made this happen!

August 2009

Another brilliant day.  2171 hens came out to see the sun shine!  A MASSIVE Thank You to all involved. All hens now settled into their new homes.

June 2009

We are delighted to be able to tell you that 2500 lovely ladies (and a couple of cockerels) have been given new lives this week!

A huge thank you to all the farm helpers, drivers, coordinators and other helpers who worked flat out during the weekend to make sure the rescue ran smoothly despite having to take the girls from upstairs in the sheds which slowed down the loading.

Another HUGE thank you to all the homers who have taken on girls this weekend - without you we would be helpless to rescue the girls, we hope you enjoy watching them start to explore their new world and develope their personalities!

May 2009

May 2nd saw the start of a new life in the sunshine for 1600 more lucky ladies! The day went like clockwork, and the hens headed off all over the country to be united with their new owners.

We are eternally grateful to everyone who helped make this such a successful day, giving their time, money and facilities selflessly to help the girls a Fresh Start in the sun!

March 2009

We have reluctantly had to increase the size of our requested minimum donation to £1.50 per hen with effect from the next rescue. The costs associated with the rescues in terms of van hire, fuel, phone costs, etc. are high, and we cannot rely upon peoples ongoing generosity in contributing their own funds to subsidise rescues. We are an entirely non profit making organisation.

We would also like to wish Carly all the best as she retires from an active involvement in Hen Rehomers. Carly created the rescue and has put her heart and soul into its running during the past year, without her those 10,000 hens would not be leading their happy free range lives!

February 2009  - we cross the 10,000 hen barrier

We are really delighted to have rescued another 2,200 hens on 28 February 2009.  Again, a huge and successful operation in which co-ordinators all around pulled out all the stops with great kindness - especially as this rescue was arranged at very short notice, and followed so quickly on the last one.

We are very proud to have rescued more than 10,000 hens altogether, just 9 months after the organisation started.

January 2009

We were very pleased to rescue 2,002 hens on 24 January 2009.  It was a huge operation, involving 30 centres, almost a hundred volunteers and many hundred rehomers. The hens were healthy and well feathered, and the operation went well - barring a few hiccoughs with hens ending up in the wrong places.   Over the next week we will be working to get them all relocated to the permanent homes they belong!  Meanwhile, all the hens are safe and its lovely to think of them all beginning their new lives outside of cages for the first time.

Thanks go out to our volunteers and rehomers, and to everyone who donated funds to allow this rescue to go ahead.

It was nice to meet up at the rescue with friends from Little Hen Rescue in Norfolk, who rehomed some of these hens and very kindly helped to arrange the delivery of our new crates.  Thank you Jo!

Crates....

Again, a big factor in the success of this rescue was the recently purchased crates.  We now have enough to rescue 2,500 birds on a single day.  This will be much more efficient, allow more birds to be rescued, and mean that rehomers do not have to wait so long for their girls.  We are hoping that the many kind donations we received during this rescue will make a big dent in the remaining deficit, but we would still be very grateful to anyone who would like to fund a crate!  Each crate is permanently labelled with the name of the person whose donation funded it, so we remember you all every time we get the girls out.

November/December 2008

Sadly both our November and our December rescues had to be cancelled due to farmers deciding to keep their hens for a few months longer.  This is because the price of eggs is particularly high just now in the run up to Christmas.  New hens can take several weeks to come into lay after being moved, and the farmers didn't want to lose the extra income.  We are reasonably confident that these hens will all come available in the new year though, so we hope to rehome them then, by which time they will be quite exhausted and all the more grateful for their new happy homes.

We did manage to rehome a small consignment of 95 sad little misplaced hens, who have found their way to permanent loving homes with much relief all round.  Thank you to those rehomers who took them at short notice.

October

October's rescue brought out more than 2,500 hens over the course of a weekend.  It's lovely to think of all these girls starting their new lives, instead of the destiny originally planned for them.  Thank you all.

Forthcoming...
